I stayed at Fort Wilderness Campground until I found
Tropical Palms in Kissimmee. It was in an ideal location, just a
short walk to Old Town and the city bus to Magic Kingdom and all of
Disney or into Orlando with a stop at Sea World or with a connection or
two to Island of Adventure and Universal. I purchased a month's
bus pass for $18 (senior pass) and it worked out great. Tropical Palms
has its own shuttle to Disney ($4 round trip) and Universal / Sea World
($16 round trip). These prices were for 2005 and 2006 - I didn't make
it down for 2007.
Old Town, just up the road a piece (easy walking
distance), has 75 specialty
shops, 8 restaurants and 18 rides. Thursday night is motorcycle
night, Friday night is the classic car parade for 1970 and newer, and
Saturday night is the classic car parade for vehicles 1969 and older.
There is always a good turnout at each of these weekly events. The
shops are representative of the 1940s and 1950s theme.
Tropical Palms has not only camping spots for tents and
RVs but fully furnished one- and two-bedroom studio cottages. There is a
game room, lighted basketball and sand volleyball courts, shuffleboard
and horseshoes.
The office sells discounted tickets for various
attractions, dinner shows, tours - they also feature film developing,
car rental and international currency exchange. A tour company
picks up and brings you back to Tropical Palms after various day trips -
I did Silver Springs Park, the Space Center, a day trip to the
Everglades, and a day swimming with the manatees. Extra charge,
but relatively reasonable.
They have "super" sites for the big rigs - in fact, the
first year I was there Chubby Checker, who was featured at Epcot for
their Food and Wine Festival, was camping there with his huge motor
home.
