The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing was founded in Manchester, England, in 1747.

Hancock Shaker Village, the Shakers' "City of Peace," represents a simpler, inspired way of life.  Now a living history museum, the village was an active Shaker community from 1783 to 1960.  The tenets of Shaker religion are based on celibacy, communal life, and confession of sin.  Other beliefs held by the Shakers include gender equality, pacifism, and a dedication to creating a heaven on earth.   Putting their "hands to work and hearts to God" the Shakers created a community based in spirituality but rich in practicality and ingenuity.

20 restored buildings, Shaker furniture and crafts, historic farm and gardens.
