CAMPING IN RHODE ISLAND

Fishermen's Memorial State Park
1011 Point Judith Road
Narragansett, RI 02882
Tel:  (402) 789-8374

When I go to Rhode Island I like to camp at Fishermen's Memorial State Park.  The only problem I have is the fact that pets are not allowed and I have to board my Westie (it is nice to see fairly tame rabbits loose around the campground).   Otherwise, it's one of my favorite campgrounds.  It's very well kept - just about all the sites are paved drive throughs for your camper, with a good amount of grass, shrubs, treed area for your picnic table, etc.  Rates are very reasonable:

Area 1
Electric, water and sewer (self-contained units only, no canvas)
Area II, IV
Electric and water
Area III
No hookups (canvas only)

The campground is only 3 miles from the Point Judith ferry to Block Island (see sister site http://www.simplybicycling.com for "Biking Around the Block."  I go in either the Spring or Fall - otherwise, it's really difficult to get a spot since it's so popular.  One area remains open for winter camping for the more hearty.

This is another state-operated campground.  This one, however, does take pets.  Campground is located on the island of Jamestown and a very short driving distance to Newport across the Newport  Bridge.  Bicyclists, however, are not allowed across the Newport Bridge so it's strictly driving into the city and then biking around the city.

Melville Ponds Campground is located on Aquidneck Island in Newport County (just off Route 114), in the Town of Portsmouth, RI.  They are five miles from historic Newport and the ocean beaches.  Pets are allowed but are carefully monitored for behavioral problems (both dogs and owners).
