Camperways
August 2001
- If you are camped in or passing through a hurricane zone, listen
to the weather forecast. If a tropical storm or hurricane builds
up off shore, listen to the storm updates at more frequent intervals.
- Fill your fuel, propane and water tanks. Empty your holding
tanks. Plan to boondock. Hook-up facilities may be limited.
- Fill your refrigerator and stock up with canned and packaged
foods. Stores may close or be out of stock.
- Familiarize yourself with the recommended escape routes, most of
which are signed.
- When you hear hurricane, think inland flooding. Storm surge
can cause lowland flooding before the storm makes landfall. If
you are camped on the coastline, barrier islands, near a river or in a
flood plain, move inland to higher ground. Monitor the
designated emergency radio stations for changes in road conditions,
flooding and traffic flow.
- Obey evacuation advisories and orders immediately. Roads
that haven't kept up with population growth can prevent efficient and
speedy evacuation. Leave before the streets flood or access is
cut off - and before the mass exodus.
- When it's all over, wait until the radio reports that roads, flood
damage and downed trees and wires have been cleared before returning.
Remember, preparation plus awareness plus knowledge equals safety.
With modern hurricane warning systems, loss of life has been greatly
reduced. |
